Ever since he and his wife moved to Needham 15 years ago, Joseph Flynn, a sales manager for an international software company, struggled to find the right place for him to work remotely.
With three young kids running around the home and making lots of noise, he was continually in search of a quiet spot where he could make phone calls, meet with business partners and focus on his work without having to drive long distances or pay hefty prices to do so.
“If you’re going to get an individual office space in Needham for say 150 square feet, it’s $700 to $1,000 and then you have to get a phone and WiFi and furniture,” Flynn said. “And when you add all that up it’s cost prohibitive for people who want to have office space.”
Flynn’s solution? To create his own co-working space where residents, entrepreneurs and local freelancers can go to work in a remote and professional environment, equipped with private meeting rooms, community tables, a printer and high-speed internet.
Flynn and his wife, Audrey, are launching this members-only workspace, Burbspace on Highland Avenue in Needham on Feb. 25, which Flynn said can fit more than 40 people and will be open 24/7.
“I was always looking for ways to work out of the house and make it affordable, so I started to look into these places, but most of them are based in the city,” Flynn said. “So I started to think, ‘why wouldn’t I just open one here?’”
According to Flynn, prices are flexible and will be set based on the member’s needs, such as how often each month they plan to use the space, or whether they want to reserve space versus using shared spaces. A single day pass will cost members $35, and a personal desk for the month will cost $449.
While the prices may certainly run higher than setting up for the day in Starbucks or French Press Cafe, Flynn said Burbspace offers superior amenities and a more professional environment than a coffee shop, and is a cheaper option than renting office space.
“With Starbucks, you’re in a place where there might not be seating available, it’s very busy, it’s noisy, while they have wifi it’s not really conducive to do business or make a phone call or have some privacy,” Flynn said. “As part of the amenities here you get everything as part of your membership. Really as a member all you have to do is bring a laptop and grab a chair.”
Burbspace will be located at 1329 Highland Ave, across from St. Joseph’s Parish and next to the Eaton Funeral Home.
“There’s a level of excitement for me because I’m also a member, and I just know that based on conversations I’ve had that this is a much needed service in the community,” Flynn said.
